Students are required to take an English Language Arts course in their eighth-grade year. The student in eighth grade English will read and understand a variety of literature chosen with a collaboration of what is being taught in eighth-grade history. Students will become writers who can compose a variety of written texts with clear ideas, coherent organization, and sufficient detail. Students will research relevant sources and evaluate, develop, and present ideas and information. Students will listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas. Students will learn how to use oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing.

Duration of Classes: Secondary (6-12): 85-minute block sessions lasting through two semesters.

By the end of this course, students should be able to read and understand a variety of texts. Connections of what they have read to what they are learning in history should be recognizable. Writing should be clear, controlled, organized, and detailed. Students will be able to listen and respond to others in an educated and informed way. The skills previously acquired will be built upon by engaging in such activities that strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills.
