General Math

General Math is a year-long course for beginning junior high students. The overarching goal for General Math is to teach a student “how to think.” Specifically, the delineated goals for General Math is as follows: To learn how to use various estimation strategies; develop a mastery of integer operations; be able to use the distributive property and understand the order of operations; calculate the mean, median, mode; and measure in metric units.

The student will learn how to write algebraic expressions and be able to solve equations and inequalities. The student will also learn about exponents, factors, fractions, operations with fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages, and learn about congruent and similar figures. Students learn to use more than one strategy to solve a problem. They compare strategies to determine which one is most appropriate in each situation. The art of reasoning is a time-honored pursuit in which this course seeks to enhance.
